The past week or so in my elementary math class, we talked about patterns. What a pattern looks like, what can be made into a pattern, how we can tell if it's a pattern. Personally, I love patterns! I think they're fun, and with certain things, like floors or buildings, if there is an obvious lack of pattern, it bothers me. And I think a lot of people are like that without even realizing it!
So, what is a pattern? Since this is an elementary class, I will put it in terms I would use with my students. A pattern is something that repeats itself. It could be a building that repeats the same window scheme over and over again. It could be floor tiles that repeat the same colors in the same way over and over again. Anything can be made into a pattern.
So, I want everyone to try to find a pattern, or make a pattern of their own, and try to figure out what makes it a pattern. Did a number repeat? Did a color repeat? You'll be surprised how many there are, and where you will find them!
